Novoskor is a private ambulance service. Our friends were making web page for them and came up with this idea of cool real-time updated map of ambulance metions in russian twitter.
We've implemented import script that monitors tweets by given keywords and detects locations and retweets. It was quite tricky to detect user locations. Thing is that in Russia most tweets don't have location tags attached. So we had to parse author's location and geolocate them.
After we got tweets location, we had to show them on custom map. So we couldn't just render points by coordinates - map is stylized and is not very geographically accurate. So we've parsed svg files of regions, extracted city coordinates on map and then matched geo-locations to these pixel locations.
Links are drawn based on retweets from different cities and regions. Links are drawn dinamically and styled with css.
